Mare owners, if you'd like to get your colt or filly started out with a proper foundation, I would suggest the investment of $5.99 in my foal-training course.

An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

A quick note about sensitizing/desensitizing: When you burn out a cue by repeating it endlessly or allow your horse to ignore a cue or rub your horse repeatedly with an object, you are "desensitizing." As you can see, sometimes that's good, sometimes it's not. When you back up an ignored cue with a good swift kick or cause the horse to move off with a single snap of your lunge whip, you are "sensitizing." Sometimes that's good, sometimes it's bad. You can sensitize your horse to pressure on the reins, but you can also desensitize your horse to pressure on the reins. If you want him to become accustomed to something (dulled or desensitized), you continue the stimulus even after the horse is moving; if you want him to become sensitized you remove the stimulus immediately when the horse moves. See the difference? It's important to understand that your horse is always learning and to be aware that you might be sharpening when you want dull.
