An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
Today we'll begin sacking out your horse. ("Sacking out" is a horseman's way of saying "get the horse used to" everyday objects like the lariat, lead rope or halter.) Sacking out and desensitizing will be an ongoing process for you the foal owner. (It never ends, not really.) Here your baby faces a steep learning curve and you'll see that when he rapidly goes from being terrified of (your hand, your waving shirt, a dropped feed bucket, etc.) to accepting the stimulus with a bored look. But don't be fooled by this – six months from now you'll still be dealing with a baby who may accept your grooming nonchalantly – but uses logic at best sparingly. Still, you'll be safer tomorrow – and can make a future ride safer – with the work you do here now. (The longest journey begins with the first step and all.)
