An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
A frequent question is "How much time should I spend training?" I typically answer (for an adult horse) "Twenty minutes training followed by a twenty-minute break followed by a second session of twenty minutes." (Never mind the horse, twenty minutes is about as long as the average human can stay focused.) For the younger horse, you may want to stick with about twenty minutes flat, maybe add another ten minutes or so if he stays focused and learning. Stick with the "no sweat" rule and you'll be fine for that period of time. While the mind of an adult can be kept occupied for longer periods, you'll find that the younger horse just sort of burns out just as a human child. Once they're "gone" they're gone and you're not going to make much improvement. Work 2-4 times a week and adjust according to good old-fashioned common sense.
